Who We Are

Expanding Access to Healthcare Across South Central LA

South Central Family Health Center (SCFHC), originally founded as San Pedro Family Health Center in 1981 by Dr. Ann Turner and Dr. Catherine Bax, began as a grassroots initiative to provide accessible, high-quality healthcare in South Central Los Angeles. Dr. Turner, a seasoned physician, and Dr. Bax, a former Catholic nun and educator turned Family Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant, were deeply committed to serving underserved populations. In its early days, the clinic faced challenges in attracting patients, prompting the founders to distribute flyers at dawn to introduce themselves and their mission to the community. Located at the corner of San Pedro and Main Street, the clinic quickly became a lifeline for diverse individuals and families—many uninsured and fleeing economic instability and conflict. Over the past four decades, SCFHC has grown into a leading Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), now operating 11 health centers across Los Angeles, including school-based Wellness Centers and two medical mobile clinics. SCFHC has earned recognition for its integrated care model, innovative community partnerships, and unwavering commitment to health equity, continuing to deliver comprehensive, culturally sensitive healthcare services to thousands of patients annually.
